Volunteers teach small classes (typically 4–6 students) or tutor individuals. There are four terms a year: fall, winter and spring terms are each eleven weeks long; summer term is ten weeks. Fall term starts in late September; winter, early January; spring, late March/early April; and summer, late June. The tutor’s commitment is term by term and substitutes can be arranged if needed.
Classes offered are typically ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages); Spanish Literacy; Adult Basic Education; Pre-GED and GED (all four subjects: math, science, social science, and language arts) in both English and Spanish; basic computers; and US Citizenship.
Most classes meet four hours a week with two-hour sessions on either Monday and Wednesday or Tuesday and Thursday. Classes are scheduled for mornings, afternoons, or evenings.
You do not need to be a professional teacher, but you do need to be excited about learning, flexible, analytical, and sensitive to the needs and skills of the students. Tutor training will be offered periodically and you may request a mentor.
Do consider joining us for what can be a remarkable volunteer experience.
Most classes are held at Mid-Valley Literacy Center, 1850 45th Ave. NE, Salem, OR.
